Just after 1700hrs on Thursday April 24, Paramedic 65 and Engine 61 were alerted to respond mutual aid to Anne Arundel County for the vehicle collision on Rt. 32 on the MD-295 Overpass. E-271 (Maryland City) was first arriving, closely followed by P-65 and E-61. P-65 and E-61 were originally put to work with pt. assessments and controlling fluids on the five car pileup. It was soon discovered that one pt. would need to be extricated from their vehicle. E-61 went to work stabilizing the car and began a rear door and b-post removal to gain access to the driver. E-61 used its portable cutters and combi-tool to gain access to the patient. After removing the B-post and rear door, E-61’s crew then removed the seatback from the passenger seat to get to the driver. The Engine crew assisted with patient removal, and transferred the patient to the awaiting AACo Medic. Units were on scene for about 45 minutes, completing fluid control and clean-up.

Today we said goodbye to our Rescue Engine. In 2002 we started the process of looking into this type service. After a carefully thought out and design phase, we applied for a grant through the AFG Program and with the hard work of several members we where awarded a apparatus grant in 2003 and along with the Maryland Fireman’s Association through the VCAF process we where able to outfit the Rescue Engine with tools needed perform the job. With this additional funding we where able to have a dedicated unit and the ability to have it outfitted properly instead of the E-one pumper we retrofitted into a Rescue Engine type unit. Several members served on the committee to design the Rescue Engine to fit our needs and the community’s.

In 2017 the leadership decided it was time to move toward another direction and focus primarily on the Rescue Squad aspect and started looking for a replacement to Rescue Engine.

In late 2017 we purchased a KME Rescue Squad to replace the Rescue Engine. As of Saturday April 7, 2018 we officially started a new chapter adding a new service to our dedication to protect and serve the citizens of Savage, Howard County and the many visitors that frequent the county. None of this could have been accomplished without the hard work of many members.

Congratulations to officers and members of Vienna VFC on purchasing the Rescue Engine, we hope she serves your membership and citizens well.

A special thanks to Assistant Chief R. Wines for working with Vienna VFC to accomplish this for both them and us.

Anytime you can provide a better quality of service to the community/tax payers it is a good use of taxpayer and donated funds Howard County Libertarians. It’s what any Howard County Volunteer or Local 2000 Member should strive for, providing a better quality of service to the ones who pay your salary and provide us with donations.
